SIX

Meet Spots. He's a four month old guinea pig that we got Vera for her birthday last week.

And this is his brother Cinnamon. Together, they are the sweetest most delightful new additions to our family.

Here's my big 6 year old girl, who I was so excited to entrust with (helping with) the care of these two new friends.

Honestly, I'm really impressed with both of the kids. They are gentle and trustworthy and so excited for the responsibility. So good. Vera made this whole list of toys that she wanted for her birthday, but I just couldn't find the romance in getting her another plastic doll… I really wanted to give her something that has substance. She also was completely surprised. I don't think she ever imagined a pet for her birthday.… Continue Reading...

Vera is five.

Okay, I know I said I'd write everyday, but who am I kidding? How about just more. More is good. The past couple of days have been fantastic, all told. I needed it, too. I needed a dose of fantastic. But I'll save that for tomorrow and keep this short and sweet.

I meant to write about this on her birthday back in February, but whatever. Vera is FIVE. How did this happen? I still remember that blustery day. I remember my two-day adventure in labor land, the transfer to the hospital and back home again… Mostly I remember the wave of joy I experienced the moment I held her in my arms sitting on that kitchen floor. I was ecstatic. I still am. She's magic, to me.… Continue Reading...

Gratitude Friday

Today, it’s easy. Today I’m grateful for my little girl, Vera. I’m so grateful for her it makes my heart physically ache… I remember that night, 3 years ago. The night I became a mama. I will always remember that night.

We just tucked her in. We read her a new story about fairies and elves and gnomes and dragons. It had beautiful pictures, and I watched her examine the pages as her eyes got heavier and heavier. She fell asleep on the last page, with her lips slightly upturned. Jeff and I just turned to each other and smiled, clicked off the light, and walked out quietly.

I’m so, so grateful.

(Don’t worry! She’ll get all three candles at her party on Sunday…)

You know, being her mother has not been without its challenges this year.… Continue Reading...

Making stuff and staying warm…

Our house has been getting insulated for the past two days (our walls were empty!)- and so the kids and I have been stuck in the house for the most part while the guys work. Just as well, really, as it’s been bitter cold and icy. We did go out to a friend’s for dinner and I managed to get rear-ended on the way. All is well, the kids slept right through it. But man, I’m really starting to feel bad every time I buckle my kids into the backseat… it’s just a tad insane the more I think about it.
Anyway, today we just laid low. A friend was supposed to come over but couldn’t, and I used the opportunity to get down to some crafting.… Continue Reading...

Big ol’ picture post.

Lots going on, although the pace seems slower. It’s as it should be. It’s that strange first month with a new baby, where you’re tired but you’ve just been sitting and nursing all day (which I know, it IS doing something and using energy, but it’s just a different activity and I don’t process it the same way). Or I’m overstimulated and bored at the same time… it’s just weird. Today has been lovely though- snuggling with both my babies (actually, all three if you count Maya!), out to breakfast with just Asa and a dear friend, jamming to The Who at loud volumes on the drive (very therapeutic), home for a bit then out to a garage sale, then I actually got a bunch of stuff done around the house and did a big harvest in the garden.… Continue Reading...

Big sister doll :)

I’ve had time lately to tie up lots of loose ends. The one thing I wanted to do that I was having trouble getting around to was that "big sister" doll I wanted to make for Vera. I planned on doing it all in the evenings, but once evening came around I was finishing up the dishes and plopping. I wasn’t focused enough to craft. So I decided to just do it while she was awake and it wouldn’t be a surprise. I finished it in two days- really it was just a few hours of work spent on it. I’m actually really, really pleased with it and she won’t let it go. Success! I’m still amazed by how easy it turned out to be. I did have to scour the internet a little to find out how they make those heads and noses and how to attach the hair, but it was really just a mishmash of info from the internet.… Continue Reading...

Crazy picture post

This past Friday we had plans to go to the beach with a friend. Both of us had stressful mornings right off the bat, and we were contemplating not going. Let me just say- when in doubt, always go to the beach. We’re definitely going every week until baby comes, then probably multiple times a week while Jeff’s off work. We all left there completely refreshed and relaxed. I knew then that if I had stayed home to get stuff done I wouldn’t have felt that good. And that’s kind of what it’s about these days. Plus, there’s so much to appreciate in little sandy toes and a happy little girl…

My Weekend…

Feeling invigorated today. Well exercised over the weekend (moving dirt will get your blood pumping!), and we managed to get a lot done despite the rain. I feel much better than I did the last time I posted- everything is in better focus. I really appreciated everyone’s encouragement. It really helped. I should definitely cut myself some slack on those days I feel overwhelmed! I’ve got a lot going on.

Anyway, I took pictures of some of our weekend.

Vera has started to "paint" with her yogurt. I don’t generally feel the need to interfere with this kind of thing that much. I figure, she can have some fun and a sensory experience, and I only deal with the clean up at the end… not the tantrum AND the clean up.… Continue Reading...

I like Sundays!

Jeff and I went to bed irritated at each other last night (it’s never really a "fight" anymore, just communication glitches it seems). In the early early dark morning, I got up to pee and when I climbed back in bed he held me close we said we were sorry. We decided to make it an "Our Sorry French Toast" kind of morning, and it’s been just the ticket. It’s impossible for us to always see each other fully. We’ve got our egos, our stress, our unfulfilled needs, etc., that hinder our ability to be patient and open with each other all the time. I’m just so grateful that we’ve got the ability and willingness to work on it, because our purpose together is clear. We are together to help each other grow and to keep each other safe in love.… Continue Reading...

Love is in my life… yes it is.

Vera’s 2nd birthday was this past Thursday! We celebrated just as a family on the day, but had a big party with both sides of the extended family yesterday. It’s hard to believe it’s already been two years, but then again, it’s hard to imagine her being any different than she is now. It does go by quickly, but always just right. I guess I’ll just get to the pictures…

So… on the subject of "terrible twos", the other day I caught Vera having a flour party in the kitchen. I had left her for literally 10 seconds. 10 seconds of a flour party can leave quite the mess. Of course, like any responsible person, I ran for my camera and snapped pictures before surveying the damage!… Continue Reading...
