Food and stuff.

Always a lot happening in the world of food around here. Sometimes I wonder if it's weird to think about it so much. Like, there's just so much in my life that, when whittled down to its core, is all about the food. I suppose it's strange to me when I consider the staunch contrast between the relationship I have (and am growing) with food and the relationship that I could have with food (that it could be essentially an afterthought). I wondered if we were abnormally preoccupied with it. I don't think so, though. Really, I think we are supposed to have a living active relationship with it. I remember when my relationship with food was unhealthy. It was before I thought so much about it.… Continue Reading...

35 weeks and garden update

35 weeks now. Only about a month to go until we meet this new little person! I can’t believe how fast it’s all gone by this time. At the same time it doesn’t surprise me. We’ve become a busy bunch this year- expanding the garden, fixing up the house (slowly but surely), philosophizing our heads off (we can’t seem to help ourselves these days), spending time with family and friends, all of course while taking care of Vera… I’m glad though- it’s kept me active and happy for the most part, and I feel really good for being almost done cooking this baby. Last time I felt good, but not this good. I was much more rickety and it was harder to move at this point with Vera.… Continue Reading...

My Weekend…

Feeling invigorated today. Well exercised over the weekend (moving dirt will get your blood pumping!), and we managed to get a lot done despite the rain. I feel much better than I did the last time I posted- everything is in better focus. I really appreciated everyone’s encouragement. It really helped. I should definitely cut myself some slack on those days I feel overwhelmed! I’ve got a lot going on.

Anyway, I took pictures of some of our weekend.

Vera has started to "paint" with her yogurt. I don’t generally feel the need to interfere with this kind of thing that much. I figure, she can have some fun and a sensory experience, and I only deal with the clean up at the end… not the tantrum AND the clean up.… Continue Reading...

Wednesday food post: Kombucha

I LOVE KOMBUCHA! Kombucha was really my first introduction to the world of bacteria/yeast-enhanced foods (unless you count yogurt), and it certainly opened my eyes. I first tried the stuff at a friend’s mother’s house. This woman introduced us to the world of Weston A. Price, which kind of transformed the way I look at food and health in general. Anyway, I remember she was very excited to have us try it, and I remember being surprised by the taste. It wasn’t bad… just different. It was fizzy, sour, and tasted slightly like tea. I learned all about the history of it- that it was a traditional drink in Russia and other parts of Asia, along with other fermented drinks like kvass. I researched the health benefits, and also how to make it (too easy), and I got started.… Continue Reading...

Ramble ramble

I know I was supposed to do a post about food, but it’ll have to wait. I’m bound to talk about food in this post, so that should count, right? Right. I think part of my reluctance is because I’ve been thinking a little TOO much lately, about everything it seems like, and I’m just trying to cut myself a break. This is my thing, though. I’m hopelessly introspective. This is usually okay with me. However, it starts to drive me crazy when I can’t figure stuff out and my head just goes in circles. Ever since Jeff and I have been talking about how civilization is not and will never be sustainable, we’ve been talking about BIG things. Like, how to we live moral lives in the context of our civilization?… Continue Reading...
