Bring it home.

Lately I've been hit with these philosophical fits that I just have to spill out onto the page. I carry around a small notebook with me to jot down thoughts when they happen. I've wanted to share them, but often don't because it's a lot of stream of consciousness and exploratory reasoning. Also, the subject matter is decidedly heavy. But here I am, spilling out a whole essay on some of my latest thoughts, and I suppose I'll consider it therapeutic just to have written and shared it. No worries if you don't make it through. I will likely be adding to this collection in the future. We'll see how it goes. I welcome healthy debate and constructive feedback, always. 🙂

Early on in my adulthood I started learning all about the sad state of the earth and our species, and how far we've fallen away from what's natural and healthy.

I’m ready, baby.

Seed catalogs are rolling in and I'm amazed yet again at how quickly that area of my brain (and soul) is rejuvenated and ready for more. I mean, my work has slowed down considerably now, but it really wasn't that long ago that the work was still steady and the food was screaming to be harvested and stored. It reminds me that we are so resilient. We can be bone-tired one day and still find new energy and strength the next. Anyway, the garden has been gifted to the chickens for the rest of the winter and they seem happy about it.

She's happy, I swear it! Grumpy dinosaur chicken. Anyway.

Around here…

My mom poked me yesterday about not posting much on here anymore. She said the gaps between entries are getting farther and farther apart, and I know she's right. I hate the idea of this place fading away for me, so I'm determined to get back into the habit. I am tempted to say that I don't have time to write like I used to, but I don't think that's entirely true. I know that while I may not have time to write as often as I'd like, I do have enough time to do more than I have been. I will continue to try.

Anyway, there is so much to share. I don't really want to dive into all the complicated stuff today- except to say that things have, in fact, been a bit complicated.… Continue Reading...

Feeling spring.

The maple syruping adventure of 2013 was a great success. We got over 2 gallons! That is, including our snafus. We accidentally mixed coffee heating up and maple syrup finishing on the stove to make one pint of mighty delicious "coffee syrup". We  also accidentally made a quart of maple sugar by heating it just a little too long. Woops! Delicious mistakes, if you ask me.

We've been going through a lot of change lately (what's new?). The Englishes are selling their house, it's looking like, so we had to quickly move the whole microgreen business here. It was good timing anyway, now that the weather works for us to keep most of them in the greenhouse. It was also a great excuse to clean and prep the greenhouse.… Continue Reading...

Microgreens.

We've been growing a business. At first I didn't really take it seriously. I mean, I've been playing in the dirt for years, and while I've gotten big results for myself, the idea that we could provide for others felt kind of out-there. But we all talked (myself, Jeff, Bri, and Brett), and thought we could pool our resources and share a single booth at farmer's market, as two urban farms. We weren't sure how much we'd have in the way of vegetables to sell, but we knew we could grow and sell a variety of microgreens to ensure we always had a full table. Shortly after we started market, we got a bite from our local co-op showing interest in our greens. Soon enough we were regularly stocking their shelves.… Continue Reading...
