Around here…

My mom poked me yesterday about not posting much on here anymore. She said the gaps between entries are getting farther and farther apart, and I know she's right. I hate the idea of this place fading away for me, so I'm determined to get back into the habit. I am tempted to say that I don't have time to write like I used to, but I don't think that's entirely true. I know that while I may not have time to write as often as I'd like, I do have enough time to do more than I have been. I will continue to try.

Anyway, there is so much to share. I don't really want to dive into all the complicated stuff today- except to say that things have, in fact, been a bit complicated.… Continue Reading...

Harvest

I grappled with what to write about, since so much has been happening around here. I think the general update will have to wait for tomorrow night, though. Tonight is supposed to get down to 30 degrees, and so we had to harvest like crazy. All the green tomatoes, all squash, all peppers and beans.

The garden I put in out at the land was mostly toast. But some squash and tomatoes survived. I'm really pleased, actually. I've never had enough space for squash like this. Harvesting was bittersweet. After the hottest summer I can remember, an early frost? Bah, a lesson in just taking things as they come and making the best of it.

This was the final harvest out at the land- spaghetti, acorn, hubbard, delicata, red kuri, ronde de nice, long island cheese, and sweet meat squash.… Continue Reading...

Life and death, again…

We've had an eventful few days. I've been working my butt off around here, and it still feels all unraveled. Such is this life I've chosen. It's like cleaning out a closet. It always looks its worst just before it all gets tucked away. Speaking of cleaning out closets, I'm looking forward to this colder weather pushing the projects indoors. I have fun plans! I am longing to do work on my new crafting space, but for today I'll have to stick with green tomatoes and sauerkraut. 🙂

I managed to do a DITL. I haven't done one in 3 years!

In other happenings, we've had a major chicken switcharoo around here. I'll start at the beginning. We got 4 chickens originally- two from an auction (before we knew better, those places are crazy!), and two older birds from a nearby farm.… Continue Reading...

Food… And I don’t care that it’s not Wednesday.

Food storage is picking up around here. I'm finding tricks to help us be more flexible in terms of time. For instance, I am through with blanching and peeling tomatoes. It was only this year that I found out it was entirely optional. Plus, those skins and seeds that people discard are good for you! No more sweaty slippery finger-pruning prep! I do have a tomato saucer, which takes out the skins and seeds anyway, but for just our home canned tomatoes/paste/salsa/sauce? It's just chop 'em up and throw 'em in a pot. So easy. Now, I also don't have hours to process tomatoes, so lately we've been letting them simmer down into paste. I'm just learning as I go here, and figuring out what works for us.… Continue Reading...
